MT.
KILIMANJARO TREK (Marangu
Route)- 9 Days
(includes air travel days)
This is the easiest of
the routes.
Day
01 - Depart the U.S. for
Arusha, Tanzania.
Day
02 - Arrive Kilimanjaro
International Airport (JRO) in Arusha, Tanzania. Transfer to the
Springlands Hotel for overnight.
Day
03 - After breakfast transfer
to the gate of Mt Kilimanjaro National Park (1830m - 6000 ft.).
Here we will meet our guide, assistant guides and porters. Now we
begin the trek through the lower rain forest. This at a nice easy
pace for about 3 to 3 1/2 hours. We'll have a light lunch en-route.
Arrive at Mandara Hut (2765M - 9070 FT) in the late afternoon. (BLD)
Day
04 - After breakfast start
again up through the forest and out onto the alpine moorlands. Today's
trek is more strenuous and takes about 5-6 hours before we arrive
at Horombo Hut (3790m -12430 ft.) in the late afternoon. At the
higher altitudes you must keep warm and drink plenty of liquids.
Loss of body heat can lead to dehydration. Rest well tonight for
tomorrow is very long. (BLD)
Day 05
- Today will be busy. Once we pass "Last Water Point"
you will notice that the plant life starts to fade the higher we
go. As we cross the "saddle" between the two peaks of
Kibo and Mawenzi the trail begins to take on a lunar effect (for
those of you that have visited there). Keep warm, the winds can
have a drastic chilling effect. We should arrive at Kibo Hut (4750m
- 15600 ft.) in about 6 hours. We'll have an early meal and get
to bed by 7pm. At 11:30 you will be awakened for a light snack and
final preparations. At just after midnight we will begin the final
push to the summit. (BLD)
Day
06 - It is early but this
is a good time to climb the scree as it will be frozen making the
climb a little easier. Our first objective is the rim of the crater
at Gilman's Point (5685m - 18648 ft.) to catch the first rays of
sunrise and that sense of achievement and pleasure of sitting On
the Roof of Africa'. This trek normally takes about 5 hours of hard
walking during the night with only your headlamp (and guide) to
point the way. Our main objective - the peak of Uhuru/The Summit!
- is now just a little further and higher around the rim. You've
done it! You are standing at 5895m - 19,340 ft.
After you have taken it all in and hammed it up for lots of photos
we will descend back down to Kibo Hut. Once we arrive at Kibo we'll
have a light snack, pack up our things and descend further down
to Horombo Hut. About half way down to Horombo is when it hits home
what you have accomplished. The remainder of this days trek has
just become that much easier. Tonight, after almost 24 hours of
snack bars, we get a nice hot and well deserved meal. A lager also
goes down pretty well. As you can imagine, sleep tonight will come
easy. (BLD)
Day
07 - Return around noon
to the Main Gate, via Mandara Hut, and collect your certificate
for the climb. Perhaps another celebratory lager before we say good-bye
to our team of guides and porters and return to Arusha and the Springlands
Hotel. We have really earned the hot shower and nice dinner that
awaits us. (BLD)
Day
08 - Rise at your leisure
and enjoy a large breakfast. Have a relaxing day while you prepare
for your trip back to the U.S. After dinner you will transfer to
Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home*. (BL)
Day
09 - Connect in European
or African gateway. Arrive in the U.S. and connect to your flight
home.
Inclusive meals
as indicated. Meals during the trek are prepared by your porters.

TANZANIA
NATIONAL PARKS AND RESERVES
LAKE
MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Lake Manyara is nestled under the wall of the Great Rift Valley.
The park is made up of five distinct vegetation zones: ground water
forests with towering mahogany and fig trees, extensive marshland
reeds, plains of open grassland, parklands scattered with acacia
trees, and the characteristic scrub land of the Rift Wall.
This park is
famous for its numerous Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard and, especially,
tree climbing Lions. There are also over 350 species of birds. Both
park hotels sit 1,000 feet up on the plateau allowing breathtaking
views of Africa.
NGORONGORO
CRATER
The eighth natural wonder of the world, Ngorongoro, was an active
volcano some eight million years ago whose cone collapsed. This
left a crater, or caldera, of 120 sq. miles, one of the world’s
largest. Unlike other African ecological systems, the crater habitat
is permanently watered and thus able to support a year-round residential
population of animals. Sheer physical beauty and the abundance of
unusually docile game animals, as well as some notable birds, make
up the magic of the Ngorongoro Crater.
MTO
wa MBU VILLAGE
Near the shores of Lake Manyara, this village is a living example
of one of the richest linguistic mixes in Africa. Home to over 90
tribes, Mto wa Mbu is possibly the only place you can hear Bantu,
Nilotic, Khoisan and Cushitic being spoken in the same marketplace.
A guide will accompany you to local homes, farmlands, resident bars,
a kindergarten and a church. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional lunch
with many local fruits.
SERENGETI
NATIONAL PARK
The Serengeti is a place where the animals know they
have inherited the earth. In this 5,790 sq. mile National Park,
millions of animals, apparently having the world to themselves,
re-enact creation every year. They live in total freedom on limitless
plains scattered with rocky outcrops, patches of acacia bush, forest
and occasional small rivers. The park contains more than 35 species
of animals including 1.8 million Wildebeest and 500,000 Zebra (seasonal).
Also, there are approximately 2,000 Lions as well as an extensive
variety of bird life.Both
Wildebeest and Zebra are involved in one of the most spectacular
of natural phenomenon, the annual Serengeti migration. They are
followed by the predators and scavengers constantly on the watch
for animals weakened by the long trek.
TARANGIRE
NATIONAL PARK
This park has a wildlife population which compares in density
with that of the Serengeti and other prime national parks. A special
feature of the park is the presence of the Greater Kudu. Tarangire
is at its most spectacular between June and December when thousands
of animals migrate into the park.
