ZED Program (Zonal Employee Discount)

Delta's interline employee travel agreements are Zonal Employee Discount (referred to as ZED) agreements. The ZED program allows employees and retirees (and eligible family members) of participating carriers to utilize standardized fares based on mileage rather than discounts off of varying published revenue fares. ZED fares are generally less expensive than ID tickets and can be accepted by any carrier that has a ZED agreement with Delta allowing travel on the other airline.

Airlines will be added as agreements are made throughout the year.

ZED Q & A

Q1 What is ZED?
A1 ZED, which stands for Zonal Employee Discount, allows employees of airlines participating in the ZED Program to purchase reduced rate standby transportation for leisure travel on other airlines. ZED fares are fixed/standard fare levels (High, Medium, Low) applicable to global zones based on mileage. ZED is used instead of the industry discount (e.g. ID90, ID95, etc.) fare programs for employee leisure travel.

Q2 Why is interline travel converting from ID type agreements to ZED fares?
A2 Delta chose to become a ZED participant because the ZED program has become the industry standard and many carriers participate in it. The goal is to replace all ID type agreements with ZED agreements. Had Delta not committed to changing to a ZED fare agreement, those few carriers with lower fares levels would have increased our fare levels to be comparable with ZED fares, resulting in the same expense for our employees.

Q3 Are ZED fares less expensive than ID agreements?
A3 Yes, in most cases. ZED fares are based on nine zones, each representing a set number of miles. Zone 1 covers segments up to 450 miles. Zone 9 extends out to 9,000 miles, enough for a flight from Los Angeles to Sydney! Each zone has a corresponding fare, which in most cases is lower than ID90.

Q4 On which airlines can Delta employees purchase ZED tickets?
A4 Delta’s goal is to negotiate ZED medium fares in conjunction with the interline ticketing and baggage agreements. A current list of Delta’s ZED partners is available on Other Airline & Codeshare Index.

Q5 Why is Delta’s goal to negotiate medium level ZED fares rather than ZED-low fares?
A5 Most carriers participate at the ZED medium fare level. Delta will negotiate ZL with our SkyTeam and codeshare partners when possible.

Q6 Does this mean Delta will no longer have ID90/95/96 discount agreements with other airlines?
A6 Delta intends to ultimately transition all reduced rate employee travel agreements to bilateral ZED agreements, but this will not occur overnight. During the transition, both ID agreements and ZED agreements will be in place. Once an agreement with a carrier is converted to a ZED agreement the ID discounts will no longer apply. Our Interline department is working very hard to conclude more agreements as quickly as possible.

Q7 Will Delta employees be allowed to travel on all other ZED members?
A7 No. Delta employees may purchase ZED tickets for travel only on airlines where Delta has a ZED agreement. During the transition to ZED, check the Other Airline & Codeshare Index to validate the other airline reduced rate agreement in effect at the time of travel.

Q8 Will all ZED agreements be the same?
A8 In the spirit of simplification, our goal would be to have the same agreement with all airlines, however, check the Other Airline & Codeshare Index to get specific policy and guidelines for specific carriers.

Q9 Once I have purchased a ZED ticket, will all other ZED airlines accept the ticket?
A9 Only if the accepting carrier has a ZED agreement with Delta and the following conditions are met:

ZED Fares are based on point to point and mileage. This also applies to through flights (i.e. ATL- SLC- LAX) to provide a coupon if deplaned enroute.
Employee can use the same ZED ticket on another carrier ONLY under the following conditions:
Origination and destination points are within the mileage for Fare level. (i.e. ZM Fare– Zone 2 new routing is within same mileage for Zone 2).
Delta has a ZED agreement with the new carrier at the same fare level (or higher) of the original ticket (i.e. ZL, ZM, ZH).
Employee must refund ZED ticket and purchase a new ZED ticket if the following changes occur:
Change to origination and/or destination points are outside of the current ZED– Zone fare they are holding.
Change of itinerary now includes a connection point or change in connection point.
Example: Employee holds a ZED ticket for travel from JFK to MIA – ok to accept for travel from LGA to FLL.

Q10 What are the acceptable forms of payment and how long are ZED tickets valid?
A10 A credit card is the only acceptable form of payment and ZED tickets are valid for 90 days from original date of issue.

Q11 How do I calculate a ZED fare?
A11 ZED fares are based on mileage. To calculate a fare, Link to ID90 fare calculator. For example, a ZED ticket from Baton Rouge (BTR) to Belize (BZE) on Continental requires a connection in Houston (IAH). The ticket would need to be issued BTR-IAH-BZE, using the specific zone fare for each flight segment on the routing. The mileage between Baton Rouge and Houston is 253 or Zone 1 or $25 and the mileage between Houston and Belize is 965 or Zone 3 or $36. So the base fare without taxes would be $61 one way or $122 round trip.

Q12 Are ZED tickets refundable?
A12 Similar to industry discount tickets, ZED tickets are refundable within one year of purchase date. ZED tickets are paper tickets and can only be refunded by submitting the unused portion of your tickets to a Delta ticket counter or send to Delta Passenger Refunds Department at the following address:

Delta Air Lines, Inc.
Passenger Refunds
Post Office Box 20537
Atlanta, Georgia 30320-2537

Please be sure to include:
Your full name, address and daytime phone number
The unused portion (coupons) of your ticket booklet
Your passenger receipt (coupon) from your ticket booklet
Any other documentation you feel necessary for consideration of your request.
Make copies of all documentation sent in.
.
Q13 Where do I go to purchase a ZED ticket?
A13 All employees purchase employee travel reduced-rate tickets such as ZED at a Delta ticket counter or city ticket office.

Q14 What if I am in a city that does not have a Delta ticket counter or city ticket office, can I go to another carrier’s counter and purchase ZED tickets?
A14 No. The industry standard is for each carrier to issue their own employees’ ZED tickets. Delta employees must continue to purchase employee travel reduced rate tickets such as ZED at a Delta ticket counter or city ticket offiice.

Q15 I am a Delta employee and I have a domestic partner. Is my domestic partner eligible for ZED fares and tickets?
A15 As Delta’s interline agreements are renegotiated, it is Delta’s intent to include domestic partner eligibility in the new ZED agreements. Domestic partner eligibility varies from carrier to carrier. Delta employees should check the Other Airline and Codeshare Index for specific details of the employee travel agreement in effect at the time of travel.

Q16 I am a pre-merger Northwest employee. Do I have access to the same ZED agreements as pre-merger Delta employees?
A16 Effective January 31, 2010, all employees are eligible for the consolidated Delta reduced-rate agreements, including ZED fares and tickets.

TRIP EXPENSES
What extra costs will there be?
Prior to the tour you will be responsible for your visas, immunizations, airfare and any other preparatory necessities.
Extras not included while on tour will be soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, extra nights hotel, optional excursions, souvenirs and any items of a personal nature.  Most of these items can be charged to your room at the hotels and lodges and then paid
by credit/debit card when you check out.  It you charge items to your room remember to tip your servers directly. Tips placed on your credit card have a way of not going to the intended parties.

Expenses, of course, depend on each persons spending and consumption habits.
Average expected expenditures are per person:
Beverages (beers, sodas, wine, cocktails, extra water and bar tips (10 %)) - $20 per day (a few sodas, a few cocktails and a bottle of water).  Wine and spirits can run upwards of $6-8 per glass.  Good African beer is about $3-4 a bottle. Mixed cocktails can be expensive. At present, 'soda guns' don't exist in the hotel/lodge bars. Therefore, the alcohol and mixer (in bottles) are sold separately.
The lodges and safari operator each provide one pint of water per day. Juices are included with each breakfast. Coffee and tea is included with all meals while on safari and breakfast in Nairobi. The lodges usually include a 'Tea Time' in the afternoon.
Items of a personal nature - $100 + (half in cash)
Souvenirs (a tough call but double whatever you expect to spend- even non-shoppers find something to purchase) - $100 - 200.  Many souvenir stands will accept credit/debit cards.  If you use a credit card always verify that the amount entered on the credit card slip is the price you agreed upon.
Miscellaneous (the I overspent and/or over imbibed emergency cash) - $75 +
Kenya Visa - $50 +
Additional Meals in NBO - $15 - 25 per meal The lunches on the second and third day are quite large. Most people eat a light meal for dinner on those days.
Optional Tribal Village Visit - $25 Must be paid in cash directly to the tribal chief. +
Optional NBO Excursion - $20 Will be discussed and explained in NBO. Group decision. +
+ Cash Item

Do I tip the servers and other staff? If so, what would they be?
Tipping is expected for the drivers and should be given to certain servers and staff at the hotels and lodges. Management at the hotels and lodges should not expect anything from you.
All tips should be in cash. Tips can be in U.S. dollars or converted into the local currency.
Expected expenditures are per person:
Driver tips (your safari guide) - $10 dollars per person per day.  This should include any full day excursions you have in Nairobi, Kenya. Given at the end of the safari.
Driver tips for half day excursions - $5.
Driver tips
(airport and city transfers) - $1.
Porter tips - $ .50 per bag*.
Meal servers - $ .50 per meal while on safari*.
* Suggestion: Small change can be hard to come by so take turns with your 'roomie' in tipping on the meals and bags (bring $30 to $35 in singles).

Estimated total of Expenses for this years group tours -
Beverages and additional Meals - $300 (some of the restaurants accept cash only)
Tips - $140 (cash only)
Other Items (listed above) - $375 ($100 in souvenirs)
ZED Airfare (using KLM) - $220

I think you'll need to have $400 in cash (minimum). You can either bring the entire amount in U.S. cash or obtain Kenya Shillings from an ATM machine in Nairobi.
Please note: The lodges do not have ATM machines. However, you may exchange US currency at the lodges.

If you'd like to limit the amount of cash you bring we suggest charging your souvenirs, beverages, laundry, and any personal items to your room at your lodge. The Balloon Safari operators will also accept credit/debit cards. Airfare can also be paid for by credit card.
You will need to have some cash for the Kenya Visa, small items, some restaurants and grocery store items that can't be purchased with a credit/debit card.
Souvenirs purchased in the tribal villages will also need to be in cash.  No ATM machines out in the 'bush' - as of yet.
